Day-to-day operations of the Village are managed and conducted by four primary departments:
Headed by the Village Administrator, this department is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the Village and oversees all other Village departments. It is the organizations primary liaison to the Village Board and is responsible for implementing the policies set forth by the Village Board. Functions such as finance, Clerk's Office, human resources, planning and zoning, public health, legal and general administration all operate within this department.
The Village Administrator for the Village of River Forest is Eric Palm. Mr. Palm has served as Village Administrator since November 2010.

The River Forest Fire Department is an all risk Fire Department that provides services in Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services (Advanced Life Support), Rescue Services, Fire Prevention, Hazardous Materials, Public Education and Disaster Mitigation.
The Department operates three 24 hour shifts with one Lieutenant and five firefighters per shift. Apparatus including two engines, one truck and one ambulance respond out of a single station located at the Village complex on Park Avenue.
In addition to the 18 firefighters and officers on shift, the department administration includes the Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and a Lieutenant to coordinate departmental training.
The Police Department is staffed with 28 sworn Police Officers including the Chief, one Deputy Chief, a Commander, five Sergeants and twenty-two Police Officers. The Police Department also employs a Community Service Officer and Records Clerk to handle non-patrol service functions and administrative functions.
The Department is a member of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System, the West Suburban Directed Gang Enforcement Task Force, and the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force through intergovernmental agreements with local state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Police services include uniformed patrol operations, investigations, youth services, traffic accident investigation and enforcement, bicycle patrol and supplementary services which include disaster preparedness and response, vacation watch program, participation with community action groups, crime prevention, drug abuse intervention, traffic pattern analysis and recommendations, elementary school Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), and Village licensing investigation and enforcement.
The River Forest Public Works Department performs and oversees various services for the improvement and maintenance of Village infrastructure and rights-of-way. River Forest Public Works is comprised of the following: Buildings and Grounds, Engineering/Capital Improvement, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Operations (includes forestry, streets, and water and sewer), and administers the Solid Waste collection and disposal contract (refuse, recyclables, and yard waste).
