Parkways for pollinators program

There has been an overwhelming response to this program and we have already reached 20 gardens, with many residents on the waiting list.  Thank you for your interest and your wish to help the environment, pollinator population, and to beautify our community.  Click here to learn about sun and shade pollinator gardens.

Plant a “Parkways for Pollinators” garden to welcome bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators into your neighborhood!

The Village of River Forest is partnering with The Deep Roots Project to offer pollinator gardens to village residents and organizations for planting on parkways to supplement the village’s parkway tree program with funding generously provided by PlanItGreen and the ComEd Green Region Grant Program in partnership with Openlands, a metropolitan conservation organization.

On a first-come, first-serve basis, The Deep Roots Project will work with Village of River Forest residents and organizations to plant up to 20 pollinator gardens each year during August and September. A representative from The Deep Roots Project will help to find the best spot for your garden on the grassy parkway between the sidewalk and the curb. They will then work side-by-side with you as well as your family, friends and neighbors or organization to plant that garden during a fun and educational hands-on garden planting activity. Kids and adults alike will have a dirt filled hour or two planting a 4 x 10 ft. native flower garden to bring back butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators to your neck of the woods!

All you need to do is:

  • Click here to learn about the sun and shade pollinator garden choices.
  • Decide on a date for planting your garden during the week or weekend. Please consider more than one date / time as the Deep Roots Project can plant no more than two (2) gardens per day.
  • Complete the Parkways for Pollinators Garden Request form .

It’s that simple.

Upon receipt of your request, the Deep Roots Project will:

  • Contact you to schedule a time to meet and decide on garden location.
  • Prep the garden area prior to planting. Yes, the Deep Roots Project will take care of prepping the area so all you have to do is enjoy some planting fun!
  • Arrange the best time to plant your garden working in partnership with you, your family and friends or organization.
  • Bring the tools, the plants and the expertise on planting day. Guide kids and adults through the planting activity.

Again, the Village of River Forest working with The Deep Roots Project is offering 20 pollinator gardens each year on a first come, first served basis for planting between August and September only.

Parkways for Pollinators is a collaboration between The Deep Roots Project and the River Forest Sustainability Commission with generous funding from PlanItGreen and the ComEd Green Region Grant Program in partnership with Openlands, a metropolitan conservation organization.
