Police Sergeant Graduates From Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety 

The River Forest Police Department is pleased to announce the graduation of Detective Sergeant James Greenwood from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety. Detective Sergeant Greenwood successfully completed the ten (10) week Staff and Command Program held in Evanston, Illinois from January 8, 2018 – May 11, 2018. This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has graduated over 18,000 students both nationally and internationally. Detective Sergeant Greenwood was a student in SPSC Class #428, which accommodated 47 students for the ten-week period.

Detective Sergeant James Greenwood was awarded the prestigious Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award. The only award granted in the School of Police Staff and Command was established in 1984 by the Center for Public Safety’s founder Franklin M. Kreml. It is awarded to the student who best displays the dedication, devotion, ethics, sense of justice, and other professional values that exemplify the kind of leadership needed in today’s law enforcement community.     

The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in a total of twenty-seven core or mandatory blocks of instruction and additional optional blocks of instruction during each session. The major topics of study include Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation.

The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the Law Enforcement Community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training, and Executive Development.

The River Forest Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Detective Sergeant Greenwood’s attendance at this program. Many of the program’s graduates go on to achieve a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies.
