Rodents

The Village is aware of rodent issues in town and is committed to helping keep this problem under control.

Rodent activity occurs and persists due to the availability of harborage, food, and water sources. Property owners may not be aware that their own behavior can contribute to the problem. To eradicate these pests, please take the following steps:

  • Do not place food or water outside for your pets.
  • Do not keep ground level water features in your yard.
  • Store pet/bird food indoors, or in rodent proof containers.
  • Pick up fallen fruit or vegetables.
  • Do not place pet/bird food on the ground - use feeders that have trays to prevent food from falling to the ground.
  • Keep vegetation neatly trimmed to avoid overgrown conditions - rodents harbor in leaf clutter.
  • Remove all refuse from your property - rodents seek nesting in tires, improperly stored firewood, rock/mulch piles, or debris.
  • Keep refuse and recycling containers clean and closed at all times - replace containers that have holes in them.
  • If you compost, ensure that the compost is kept in a tightly sealed container - composted kitchen waste requires additional caution as it can be a food source for rodents.
  • Maintain building foundations under sheds, porches, steps, and garages and consider installing a barrier that prevents rodents from harboring in these locations.

If you would like to have your property inspected for property maintenance opportunities, contact the Village at (708) 714-3523. You can also use the Village's service request form and submit a Nuisance complaint.

If you suspect rodent burrows are on your property, it is critical that you contact a pest control firm immediately to implement eradication efforts.

For everyone’s safety, the Village is required to enforce related laws to ensure property owners are taking appropriate steps to address rodent infestations. Failure to do so may result in citations and/or fines.
