The Village is aware of recent immigration enforcement activity conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal law enforcement agencies. The agencies conducting this enforcement have not provided any communications or advanced notice to the Village regarding immigration enforcement activities.
The Illinois TRUST Act prevents River Forest Police from participating in, or assisting with federal immigration enforcement. All Village police officers are trained in the TRUST Act requirements and the Village’s Welcoming Resolution - which outline that while local police do not engage in federal immigration enforcement, officers continue to have full authority to enforce State laws and local ordinances. These responsibilities are essential to serve and protect the community and should not be mistaken for immigration enforcement activities.
As a reminder, when residents call 911, police officers respond independently and will not be accompanied by ICE. Officers will not ask about a person’s immigration status, and the Department does not detain anyone based solely on immigration status or assist with immigration investigations.
Federal laws require that our police not interfere with federal agencies carrying out their duties within River Forest, however there are resources available to community members seeking resources and legal assistance. While the Village does not work directly with, or endorse any specific nonprofit organizations, The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) offers a hotline (855-435-7693) that can connect individuals with an immigration attorney to understand their rights. There are also resources available on how to handle interactions with federal officers.
The Village continues to work closely with neighboring municipalities and local officials to ensure our approach aligns with regional best practices. Our collective action plan emphasizes transparency, community engagement, and peaceful expression. If residents choose to voice their concerns publicly, peaceful and respectful demonstrations are strongly encouraged. The National Lawyers Guild of Chicago offers a guide for individuals taking part in protests.
Additional information about the Illinois TRUST Act and how it guides local law enforcement can be found in the Illinois Attorney General’s guidance.
The Village is committed to ongoing communications and will continue to provide updates as we receive verified information in our weekly Enewsletter. If you’re not signed up already, you can visit vrf.us/enews to subscribe.
