Winter Weather Reminders

January, 25, 2021

With snow in the forecast, River Forest Public Works crews are ready to hit the streets. Please remember that parking is not permitted on any Village street after two inches of snow or more has accumulated on the street, and for up to eight hours after the snowfall ends, to allow snow plows to safely clear the street. This helps our dedicated Public Works department do their jobs to keep our streets clean and safe from road hazards.

Please also keep in mind the following:

  • Village code requires residents and business owners to remove snow and ice from sidewalks in front of and adjacent to their property within 24 hours after an event.
  • Snow or ice frozen on sidewalks that cannot be removed without injury to the pavement should be treated with an abrasive material until weather permits further clean-up.
  • Snow removal contractors are prohibited from using snow blowers between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.
  • The placement of snow or ice on any Village owned street, alley or sidewalk is prohibited. -Please maintain a 3-ft clear-away zone for fire hydrants in front of your home by removing any snow and ice in the zone and keeping a clear path from the hydrant to the street. This assists Fire Department personnel in the event of an emergency.

The Village will not grant overnight parking passes during the above conditions. Always be safe and drive cautiously if you have to go out! Please take a moment to review the Village’s guide to snow removal at vrf.us/Snow for regulations and safety tips.
