A Special E-News Message from the Village President, Catherine Adduci

Winter Storm

Dear River Forest Residents,

As we dig out from this winter storm please keep the following in mind.  Please also remember to check on your neighbors, particularly those who may need help to remove snow.  This is what River Forest is all about….neighbors helping neighbors!

A few reminders:

Parking

  • Parking is not permitted on any Village street for up to eight hours after the snowfall ends to allow snow plows to safely clear the street. This helps our dedicated Public Works Department clear the streets from curb to curb.
  • The Village is not granting any overnight parking passes. The Village will notify residents when this restriction is lifted.

Snow Removal

  • Sidewalks must be cleared to ensure they remain passable for pedestrians.  Residents and business owners will have 24 hours after the snowfall ends to remove snow and ice from sidewalks in front of and adjacent to their property. If there is snow and ice on the sidewalk that is frozen so hard that it cannot be removed without damaging the pavement, an abrasive material such as rock salt, must be spread and as soon as the weather permits the snow and ice must be removed.
  • When snow blowing and shoveling, keep in mind that the snow cannot be placed onto the streets, alleys or sidewalks.
  • Snow removal contractors are prohibited from using snow blowers between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Keep Hydrants Accessible

  • The Fire Department asks for your help ensuring that hydrants are visible and accessible.  Please maintain a 3-ft. clear-away zone for fire hydrants in front of your home by removing any snow and ice in the zone and keeping a clear path from the hydrant to the street.

Senior Citizen and Persons with Disabilities Snow Removal Program

  • The Village is offering a Snow Removal Program to eligible senior citizens 65 years of age and older and residents with disabilities. Seniors who qualify for a senior freeze property tax exemption or other financial or unique hardship are eligible for this program. This program will assist eligible residents with snow removal from the public sidewalks and front pathways to their homes. For more details and to apply, see the application form. Completed forms can be submitted in person at Village Hall or via email. Once an application has been approved the property address will be provided to the Village’s snow removal contractor. If you are an eligible senior and in need of snow removal now, please contact Public Works Director John Anderson at 708-714-3550 or email janderson@vrf.us and a snow removal contractor will be directed to your property as quickly as possible.

For more information, you can view the Village’s guide to snow removal for information regarding Village regulations and safety tips.  For regular updates on statewide road conditions, visit www.gettingaroundillinois.com

Sincerely,

Catherine M. Adduci, Village President
